Task 1 Structure – The Value Chain Create a diagram that describes, explains and analyses the Value Chain within the games industry. Include a profile of each sector.
Developers – This is the actual studio where the games are created and can be independent or owned by a publisher. The development teams can be really small or really large, depending on the size of the project and the budget. Inside these studios, the developers have many different jobs which could include art, programming or finance.
Publishers – The publishers are the people involved with the marketing of the game and, in a way, control how much the game sells. They work on promoting, marketing, distributing and financing game titles, so that it gets recognised. The more recognition it gets, the better it will sell.
Console manufacturers – Examples of console manufacturers are Microsoft or Nintendo. They create the actual consoles the games work on, so they can be played by the public. They can also decide which titles to accept and which studios to buy to create exclusive games for, for example, Naughty dog studios were bought by Sony and now create titles only available for the PS3 such as The Last of Us.
Distribution and retail – Distributors sell the product to retailers for them to sell to the public. Retailers add the game to shelves in-store so that customers can see and buy them if interested which would make the company money.
Outsourcing companies – These companies provide certain packages to developers when bought. These could be anything such as art, animation or a physics engine.
Mobile platforms – This section decides if any of the companies titles should be made for sites such as Facebook or for phones or tablets. Doing this would get the actual game more recognition which would lead to more purchases
Press and media – The press and media are responsible for any reviews made about the game. These reviews can make or break a game as if the game gets bad reviews, not many people will buy it whereas if it got good reviews, people would believe it is worth buying, so the company would make more money.
